Founders of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.,
December 4, 1906
|
|
Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the first Greek letter college fraternity
founded by and for African American men. The seven remarkable
men who founded the Fraternity on December 4, 1906, were scholars
at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The term "Jewels"
has been adopted by the Fraternity as its official designation
for its founders. While several of the Jewel - founders were members
of this elite group by consensus from the earliest days of the
fraternity, some discussion and debate ensued into the middle
of the 20th century as to filling out this elite group. Above
are portraits and names of these revered Alpha men, all of whom
are now deceased having entered into our Omega Chapter. Additional
information on the history of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
is available at the Fraternity's national web site (via the National
link at left) or from the book The History of Alpha Phi
Alpha, A Development in College Life, by Brother Charles
H. Wesley, and published by the Foundation Publishers, Baltimore,
Maryland. Additional history regarding Iota Lambda Chapter is
available via the History link at left.
