On
Wednesday, February 25, 2009, Indiana University Purdue University
at Indianapolis (IUPUI) held one of several scheduled celebrations
of the 40th anniversary of the university. This celebration commemorated
the 10th anniversary of University College, the program through
which most students enter the university before admission to specific
schools and undergraduate degree programs. The target audience
for the IUPUI/University College anniversary event was somewhat
different than for the building renaming in May
of 2008 to Joseph T. Taylor Hall. Present for this signal
event were a number of senior university administrators along
with primarily invitees from various university units and persons
formerly affiliated with IUPUI or University College. Also present
were members of Br. Dr. Taylor's family.
The lobby
of Taylor Hall was festively decorated for the program and the
reception which followed. Among the many speakers were Chancellor
Charles R. Bantz, Dean of University College Scott Evenbeck, Executive
Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties, Dr. Uday Sukhatme,
and Superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools Dr. Eugene G.
White. An original jazz composition was played during the program
by the composer and a skilled ensemble of musicians. The concluding
highlight and a particularly touching moment was the unveiling
of the bust of Br. Dr. Taylor, with Mrs. Taylor admiring the rendering.
Iota Lambda Brothers Ed Squires and Isham J. Bennett were privileged
to attend.
