Alpha
Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., led by Iota Lambda Chapter, is among
the oldest continuing participants in the Circle City Classic,
celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The Fraternity's primary
involvements are in the annual parade, and in attending as a group
the actual football contest. In 2008, the Classic featured Alabama
A&M University vs. Tuskegee
University. Renowned NFL receiver, Jerry Rice, returned as
Grand Marshall to the event in which he was a principal contender
in the inaugural game. This year for the first time, the game
was held in Indianapolis' newest landmark, the impressive Lucas
Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis
Colts home games, and of many other marquee events.
Although the Alpha
unit in the parade was not our largest, it was nonetheless full
of Alpha Spirit. Brothers from Sigma Phi Chapter at IUPUI carried
the Fraternity Banner. Brothers from Iota Lambda and the area
marched as escorts. Chapter President Br. William Lindsey rode
in Br. Isham Bennett's stylish wheels. Br. Fron Neal drove a second
vehicle with a souped up sound system to accompany the step team
primarily composed of Brothers from Theta Xi Chapter, Ball State
University. Miss Black and Gold Indiana added to the prestige
of the unit. Along the way, the unit received a warm reception
and was surrounded by exciting bands, colorful floats, and other
Greek Letter organizations to include our beloved AKAs.
After marching
the lengthy parade route, Brothers and guests found their way
to the festival market place on Pan Am Plaza to consider merchandise
from Afrocentric, Pan-Hellenic, and almost every other imaginable
genre. Then on to the cavernous interior of Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Alpha seating block near midfield on the visitor's side gave
an excellent view of game action and the "Battle of the Bands".
